Coal from this mine was primarily used for steam and domestic purposes. Mr. Conley Lyons was the general mining foreman for Coeburn mine at this time. The large Thelma mine had coal averaging eight feet. Some mining mechanics were used in Thelma mine for cutting through the coal. Mr. W. A. Smith was general foreman.

Both my dad's and mom's family were coal miners. Both families lived at Cranberry, a coal mining community near where I was born. I never lived in a coal mining community since my parents moved to Prosperity shortly after my brother was born. During the years when mining was king in Appanoose County, there were over 400 mines that opened and closed. The first one was near Mystic in 1857. Commercial mining began in 1863 and Appanoose became the third largest coal-producing county in Iowa. The peak year for the county coal was 1917.
